Competition Bolt or Firefly Bolt?

Volquartsen Competition Bolt and Firefly Bolt

Our Firefly Bolt has recently been featured in several videos highlighting FRT and binary triggers for the 10/22®. This has caused some confusion about which bolt is best for your needs.

A quick comparison between the two.

Both the Competition Bolt and the Firefly Bolt come with reduced-power and heavy-power springs that you can easily swap to fine-tune your setup. Both bolts also feature our Exact Edge Extractor and SureStrike firing pin for incredibly smooth cycling.

Where do they differ?

The Firefly Bolt is machined from aluminum and Type III hard-anodized. The Competition Bolt is machined from steel and features a DLC coating.

If you are looking to shoot a range of 22 LR ammo, the Competition Bolt would be your choice. Its DLC coating makes it ideal for shooting everything from subsonic to high-velocity rounds.

As versatile as the Competition Bolt is, it doesn't reliably cycle CCI Quiets rated at 710 fps because the reduced blowback isn't enough to cycle the steel bolt. That is where the aluminum Firefly Bolt comes in. It was designed for this exact reason and will handle any round up to 1050 fps.

We have had a lot of questions about using the Firefly Bolt with ammo faster than 1050 fps, and while it may cycle, the aluminum design isn't meant for long-term use with anything faster than 1050 fps.

While the Competition Bolt and Firefly Bolt aren't interchangeable, both will elevate the performance of your 10/22® platform.
