How often do you clean a 22 LR?

Preview of: Utilizing The Breakthrough Clean Line of Products

Most rimfires have a bad rap that they need to be kept in pristine condition in order to function properly. When in fact, we have found most shooters overclean their rimfires! This really isn't necessary, and not spending all your time cleaning is actually one of the many things that makes shooting 22 LR so much fun!

So how often should you clean? There is no perfect answer. It'll depend on several things - type of ammo, weather conditions, shooting suppressed or not, and even length of time between visits to the range.

We have done demos at various events where we have gone 5000 rounds between cleanings over a two day period. This may seem excessive to some but if the shooting takes place over a short period it should not be a real issue. However, at the same time if you were to shoot 400-500 rounds in a day and then didn't plan on shooting again until the following month it would be a good idea to clean them as soon as you are finished shooting.

The best recommendation we can make is to clean at the end of a shooting session or weekend. It doesn't need to be a 3-hour gun cleaning session but rather something can be done in a matter of minutes.

Cleaning Supplies

Breakthrough® Clean offers a couple of products that make cleaning easy - the Battle Ropes in both 22 LR and 17 HMR along with their All-in-One CLP.

Once they are in need of cleaning, as you can see in the video it's a pretty straightforward process.
